Lauhala (leaves from the Hala tree) have been used by people in tropical regions for many years. The color of finished lauhala products may vary from light tan to deep brown. When used for weaving purposes, lauhala is sold in “rounds” or bundles.
Many of the baskets mats and hats on the market come from The Philippines or the South Pacific ( Tonga, Fiji, etc.). A good deal of the lauhala products marketed in Hawaii are frequently imported from these countries as well.
